I thought they only wanted 1 child per family, why are they mad? This should help get the population in China down.

Well, I don't suppose they care about a few million deaths, but it's very bad for business.

This reminds me of Thomas Mann's story, "Death in Venice."

If he's been in ICU for 3 months, could it be SARS? Did he come to Toronto from Guangdong province?

An additional 150 suspected SARS cases have been identified through stepped-up measures to find people exposed to the disease. Those people have been able to get early treatment — which Hong Kong doctors fighting SARS say is crucial.

This may be the key to Hong Kong's slowing hospitalizations.

"The figures are stabilized," Tung told reporters. "I think we are making good progress."

Is this believeable?

I'd feel much more comfortable if Hong Kong would keep the schools closed. Opening the schools could be a big mistake.

Experts call a decline in new cases encouraging, but some say Hong Kong needs to see a sharp and sustained drop and they warn the territory's proximity to mainland China, where the disease originated and is still spreading, could complicate matters.

"You really have to look at trends - the daily figure or two days or three days doesn't really mean anything," said Malik Peiris, a microbiologist at the University of Hong Kong. "Really what you need to look at is maybe on a week, two-week basis. Is there a consistent trend downward? Then, one can feel more confident."

Hong Kong would appear to be heading in the right direction if new cases dropped into the single digits and stayed there, said Henry Niman, a Harvard University instructor who teaches surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital.

"It wouldn't mean Hong Kong was out of the woods, but it would be an indication things are contracting in Hong Kong rather than expanding," Mr Niman said. "It needs to continue going down and getting into single digits on an ongoing basis would be a good indication things are getting better."
